Am I Late?
Are you late? In a word, no. But it’s not a simple yes or no question. As you continue to research the larger space around NFTs – web3 – you quickly come to realize how much the space has already evolved from its beginning.
Context
Let’s put it into some context. Quantum by Kevin McCoy was the first NFT. Quantum was minted in May of 2014 on the Namecoin blockchain (the term NFT wasn’t even used at the time). The first NFT minted on the Ethereum blockchain, Terra Nullius, was built to allow owners to stake their claim on the blockchain. The first one was minted in August 2015. And let’s be honest, your buddy who got you excited about NFTs in the first place didn’t hear about them until the end of 2020 and didn’t dive in until 2021. You’re not late, but you do have some catching up to do.
Luckily, there are a lot of ways for you to get caught up on what has happened, what’s current, as well as thoughts as to what comes next. If you’re starting from square one, go ahead and peruse our Learn section. There are a lot of nice primers to get you started there.
It’s perfectly normal to find yourself with more questions than answers as you begin your research. Many of us have found ourselves confounded as we try to wrap our heads around this new technology and the outsized possibilities that come with it. Don’t let this stop you! Not only are there many others who are on the same journey as you, but also things change. Something could be true in the space one week and completely obsolete by the next.
Next Steps
Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the basic lingo and core concepts behind blockchains, start going down the Twitter and Discord rabbithole. Twitter is a great space to find projects and creators. Often this will lead to Discord channels that help foster the community around the project.
Now. We have reached the point where you are interacting with other people in the space. We feel it our duty to call out some things we have learned in safeguarding ourselves:
- Never share personal info.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it is. No one is really getting rich quick here.
- DO NOT RESPOND TO UNSOLICITED DMs. A “great” project hits your DMs before your morning coffee and you could be looking at a tragedy.
- DO NOT EVER EVER EVER SHARE YOUR SEED PHRASE!! If you are at the point where you have a wallet (whether you are holding NFTs, crypto or nothing), do not give anyone your phrase. We know walletholders have already been warned, but in case you somehow missed it (and for those who aren’t there yet), do not do this. Ever. Thank you.
Wrap Up
We get it. These all seem like obvious no-brainers. You would be floored at some of the things we have seen happen, watching hard work disappear instantly.
So, if you’re willing to put in the hours getting acquainted, you’re right on time. So go on, learn, mint, and when you’re ready to display? We got you covered.
